Opposition raises more questions on "Manatt" deal

THE Opposition People's National Party (PNP) yesterday asked the Government to say if Kingston's ambassador to Washington, Anthony Johnson, and Solicitor General Douglas Leys were aware of the controversial contract on 'extradition' matters with the US law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips.

The PNP, at a press conference yesterday at its Old Hope Road headquarters in Kingston, alleged that it would have been unlikely for a such a contract to exist without the knowledge of Johnson and Leys.

Red-hot controversy continues to swirl around the Government over the deal involving top-flight American law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips.

The troubling arrangement, which attracted a hefty US$100,000- (approximately J$8.9 million) per-quarter fee, kicked off last October.

The firm then filed documents on the United States Department of Justice website claiming that it represented the Government of Jamaica.

Bunting proposes new Police Service
